Our Mild/Moderate Special Class

Our Mild/Moderate Special Educational Needs class is a very integral part of our school. Our dedicated teacher and SNA’s work tirelessly to ensure that the children feel valued and are actively part of our school community.

We currently have 7 children in our class with varying needs from Junior Infants to First Class age. We aim to ensure that each child develops at his/her own pace and become as independent as possible, develop their social skills and above all enjoy their learning experiences whilst in our care.

We also run a mainstream integration programme and the children visit our mainstream classes on a regular basis for lessons which may be of benefit to them from an educational and social perspective.

The class teacher works individually and in groups with the support of our SNA’s on individualised programmes developed specifically for each child.

We understand that choosing a school for your child is probably one of the most difficult decisions you will make on their behalf. We understand that you are their advocate and want the absolute best for your child. This is why our home school links with parents of our Special Class is very important to us.

Children are accepted into the Special Needs Classes following Dept. of Education Guidelines. A Psychological Assessment recommending Special Education and consultation with parents are necessary before a child is placed in the Special Class.

Parents and pupils are invited to visit the school to meet with principal and special class teachers prior to enrolment. Following this meeting, study of the psychological report and consultation your child will be enrolled.

We also liaise with outside agencies to ensure that the best possible educational provision is provided to the children and we work closely with Scoil na gCailiní and Scoil Mhuire na mBuachaillaí, our neighbouring schools, on transitions to their Senior Special Classes.
